Actor Bernard Lee returns for the second time as M, the head of the British Secret Service. Lee's performance is once again perfect and the quality of his tenure in the role of M has yet to be matched.
M sends Bond off to Istanbul into an obvious trap, showing how badly the western intelligence agencies want the Lektor. M is seen again in a later scene, where Bond's comment about an experience with a lady and he embarrasses him considerably in front of Miss Moneypenny and several others.
Miss Moneypenny:
Lois Maxwell makes her second appearance as M's lovely lovesick secretary who lusts after Bond. Maxwell is perfect in the role and would continue to play it to great effect until 1986.
Moneypenny calls Bond when he's busy with Sylvia and Bond explains that he's "just reviewing an old case", which Sylvia doesn't appreciate. Moneypenny hears Sylvia of course and replies "your old case sounds interesting James..."
Q/Major Boothroyd:
Desmond Llewelyn makes the first of many appearances as the gadget genious Major Boothroyd (who would later become known simply as Q). Though not his scolding self that most fans associate with the character in this film, he still gives Bond the typical (although few in number, which isn't a bad thing) gadgets for the film.
Llewelyn was an excellent actor and would go on to play Q up until his tragic death in 1999.
